Mack The Knife Lyrics

(written by: Bobby Darin)

Send "Mack The Knife" Ringtone to your Cell

Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear
And it shows them pearly white
Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe
And he keeps it, ah, out of sight
Ya know when that shark bites with his teeth, babe
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves, oh, wears old MacHeath, babe
So there's never, never a trace of red

Now on the sidewalk, huh, huh, whoo sunny morning, un huh
Lies a body just oozin' life, eek
And someone's sneakin' round the corner
Could that someone be Mack the Knife?

There's a tugboat, huh, huh, down by the river dontcha know
Where a cement bag's just a'drooppin' on down
Oh, that cement is just, it's there for the weight, dear
Five'll get ya ten old Macky's back in town
Now d'ja hear bout Louie Miller? He disappeared, babe
After drawin' out all his hard-earned cash
And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor
Could it be our boy's done somethin' rash?

Now Jenny Diver, ho, ho, yeah, Sukey Tawdry
Ooh, Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Oh, the line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky's back in town

I said Jenny Diver, whoa, Sukey Tawdry
Look out to Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Yes, that line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky's back in town
Look out, old Macky's back!!

I think Bobby was an amazing talent who managed to span the vegas ""Rat Pack" 50's and the early rock sixties (don't forget "splish splash" I think cought in the middle of rock and the traditional lounge stuff, although he did the both very well, it seems to me he could never decide if he wanted be the next Sinatra or take on Elvis. IMHO

Also worth noting -- the original name of the song (Mack the Knife) was "Moritat."

Darin had such great talent, yet relied very heavily on songs written and sung by others many years earlier (Hoagy Carmichael, etc.).

I hope the lyrics of "Amy" will also be posted. It was the flip side of "Lovin' You." It was a stiff nationally, but went to #1 in some mid-western markets, including Oklahoma City. It was a very short, simple song, but the lyrics are beautiful.

In the last verse the original line was:
"Look out Miss Polly Peachum..."

Bobby replaced it with 'Lotte Lenya'.

Lotte was a German actress who was married to Kurt Weill, one of the writers of this song. Her most well-known American appearence, I believe, was as the Villianess Rosa Klebb in the James Bond movie 'From Russia With Love'.

Please correct: Bobby Darin did *not* write "Mack the Knife" -- he adapted Marc Blitzstein's English adaptation of a song from Brecht & Weill's musical "The Threepenny Opera".

Always loved it, only lyrics I could remember were, 'Oh the shark bites', '..and old Lucy Brown'. Until now!

Did a google search on 'Mac the Knife', found out the song came from the Threepenny Opera. The song makes more sense after reading what the opera was about.

This song really came alive for me in the movie "Quiz Show." I read that Robert Redford used it to encapsulate the innocence and yet terrible reality of that era in American history. There was such a naivety during those years, and yet, as the movie portrays and the song reinforces, there was anger, violence, and dishonesty going on "off stage."

Great, great song. I love this song.

Love this song. Always have. One of the things that has always fascinated me is how incredibly "dark" it is - yet it is sung in such a happy way - allowing the violence to sneak in under the radar. Reminds me of the Beatles' Maxwell's Silver Hammer.
