There was a boy
A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
Over land and sea
A little shy and sad of eye
But very wise was he
And then one day
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things
Fools and kings
This he said to me
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return"
<instrumental interlude>
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return"
A great version of this already-great song sung by Nat King Cole back in '48. Bobby Darin must surely rate as one of the most versatile of all singers : while cover versions are usually just that ( and what an awful number of these us Brits made of classic US material in the 50's, 60's and even today! )in Darin's Nature Boy there is somehow respect for the original and an imaginative new treatment - particularly in the last few lines and fade out! Rarely heard - (my brother bought the original back in 60-something)- it should be!
